Synopsis

Joanna Hall and a programme designed to help keep weight down.

Customer Reviews.

Dear Joanna,

First of all, thank you very much for giving me the push necessary to get me going this New Year. A healthy lifestyle, eating properly and exercise are what we should all be striving for, but in practice, many, like me, fail to "get round to it".

I've never been really unfit or overweight, but at the same time I've always wished I was slimmer/more toned/more energetic. However in the last few years since leaving work and having two children, unfortunately my priorities have changed and I find I have virtually no time to call my own. Also being at home I have slipped into the habit many at home mothers will agree with, nibbling all day and eating up the children's leftovers. In consequence my weight has crept upwards from being static for nearly 10 years until I was two stone heavier after having my second child. I've since managed to lose a stone, but would like to lose more and certainly tighten all those "wobbly bits" I seem to have acquired!!

What first impressed me about your DVD "Drop a Size for Life" was your attitude. The lasting impression I had was your positive approach. The DVD didn't preach or lecture, and you spoke on a level to me, which made me continue to watch and persevere.

What I particularly liked about the programme was that by dividing it into manageable exercise sessions of 10-20 minutes I feel after watching it once, I will use it again. Each section specifies what body areas are targeted so I know which sections I can try as my time is very limited. The use of a clock on screen is excellent, you can see exactly what stage you are at. Plus using the two different girls demonstrating the easier or harder options at the same time encourages everyone without having to skip forward or back to easier or harder sections.

At the end of each section you gave tips on how to get more from the exercises. This is great if like me you aren't doing as many of the exercises as you should. Even spending ten minutes feels really worth while.

I haven't progressed to the longer sections yet, i.e. the Cardio Calorie Burn or the Metabolic Boost, but when I do the 30 second alert will be great for a beginner like me.

The Carb curfew ® is something I am definitely going to introduce into my eating habits. I've done low Carb diets before and found them hard work, but by setting a 5pm deadline has got to be more achievable. My one and only criticism was the recipe; there was only one!! The chicken provencal with vegetables looked fab and I am planning to try it out this week for my husband.

You've given me the chance to get more active, and now it is up to me and with as little help from willpower I hope I succeed.

Many thanks once again and very best wishes

Helen West

The ideal way to fit some exercise into your day!

Push back the coffee table folks and drop a size for life!!

New Years resolutions are not something I normally subscribe to but a new work schedule in 2003 severely reduced my free time or more importantly reduced my gym attendance. No matter how I tried it was getting harder to find the time and the motivation to make the trek on dark evenings after work to the fitness emporium.

After reading about Joanna Hall on the Feelgood section of the Irish Examiner I decided to try a home fitness programme. I have always enjoyed the buzz of aerobics class and was hoping that exercising alone wouldn’t be too cringe inducing! So I closed the sitting room curtains and pressed play.

The presentation of this DVD is professional and understated. From the main menu to Joannas’ tips on how to get the most from the video it is clear that this is a programme that is serious about getting you in shape. I had never seen Joanna before but she looks healthy and toned and exudes a confidence that goals can be achieved. Everyone can get fit and at their own pace.

The programme can be played straight through for a very intensive work-out of over an hour but with 5 distinct sections, portions of the DVD can be chosen a la carte for shorter work-outs.

The “Instant Booster” is a short stretching module that is great for a morning wake-up call or perhaps a warm-up before heading out for a walk. The “Cardio Fat Burner” and the “Metabolic Booster” together give the body a great work out but even on their own boost the most tired soul after a tough day at the office.

The bits that need toning and firming are given special attention in “Midriff Management” and “Lower Body Programme”. These can be equally effective in single doses or as part of a longer session.

On first viewing I thought the music a bit electronic and feared it wasn’t going to bring me along as the music that usually pounds in the Aerobics studio does but I just had to downsize on this aspect of the work out. The music doesn’t become the main motivator to keep you going, the gentle encouragement of the instructor’s voice is what the brain tunes into.

The steps and moves are by no means difficult and one doesn’t need to have the co-ordination of a member of S Club Seven! Likewise the moves are quite contained do not require a huge amount of space.

With 2 other girls on the screen there are essentially 3 different paces from which you can choose, low, medium or high impact. This is excellent in order to measure progress. Can I keep the high impact going for the entire work-out??!! If not then it’s something to aim for.

The setting for the work-out is extremely soothing to look at. The room is bright and the wooden floors with the French doors open into the garden help you forget that you are in your own living room. The colours of the scatter cushions on the patio give a nice oriental feel.

The introduction gives a very good overview of what to expect and would certainly dispel any trepidation of first time users! Tips on technique are vital for anyone new to the exercise world and reinforces the impression that this is a programme that is devised and delivered by people who know what they are about.

I would have included a little message between each sections to drink water. I certainly need the water bottle close to hand after the 2 more energetic sections!

The inclusion of a little dietary advice closes the loop nicely on how a few little changes to our daily routine can yield the results we hope for!

I have a new habit for the New Year and it means I can now make exercise part of my day whether for an hour or for 20 minutes. I put on weight in the past 12 months due to the lack of exercise. I have a stone to lose and I know if I eat sensibly, cut out carbohydrates after 5pm and exercise I can drop a size and drop it for life!
