If you draw an imaginary line down from the pedometer it should fall directly over the midline of the knee. Make sure the pedometer fits snugly to your body and does not hang loose. The pedometer needs to be completely closed to function properly.

To avoid mistakenly resetting your pedometer all of Joanna's pedometers feature a delayed reset button. To reset your pedometer gently press the button with the pad of your finger and held for approximately 2 seconds to clear.

To reset the Step Count: Press and hold the RESET button until a zeros appear; you are now ready to begin walking.

Caring for your Pedometer:

Your pedometer has been designed to be durable but it goes without saying that it does need a bit of care and consideration when using it:

  • Avoid dropping or crushing, which could break the crystal, which will affect your screen ready and accuracy of step count.
  • Avoid excessive moisture. Joanna's pedometers are not waterproof.
  • Avoid forcing the pedometer clip onto belt or pant waist, which could cause the clip to break.
  • Change the battery when the digital display becomes faded or blank. We recommend changing the battery once a year to maintain optimum performance. Batteries are available from most good electrical shops.

Joanna Hall Optimum Pedometer (Five Function)

5 function digital pedometer.

How To Wear Your Pedometer:

Pedometers are designed to be worn at the waistline, directly in line with the midpoint of the thigh and kneecap. This positioning will be accurate for most users, but if you find it is not accurate for you, follow the directions below to identify the best position for your new Joanna Hall pedometer.

Press the MODE button until the step counter is visible. Place the pedometer on your waist band in line with the midpoint of your thigh and kneecap. Open the pedometer without removing it from your waistband. Press and hold the RESET button until zero appears, then close the cover. Begin walking at a normal pace while counting 30 steps. Stop and open the pedometer to check the step count. If it is within plus or minus three steps of 30, this is an accurate location for your pedometer. If the count is off by more than three steps, perform step two below.

This objective of this step is to identify an accurate placement point for your pedometer. Move the pedometer toward the outside of your leg so it is positioned just in front of your hip. Open the pedometer, reset and close it, and take 30 steps as described above. If the step count is within plus or minus three steps of 30, this placement can be used for accurate measurement. If not, move the pedometer toward the hip or belly button and repeat the 30 step test until an accurate position is found. This accuracy test can be done on a regular basis to assure your pedometer is recording accurately.

The pedometer must remain upright (with the display perpendicular to the floor and parallel to your body) to measure accurately. Occasionally, overweight people find that the pedometer falls forward and either undercounts the number of steps or does not count at all. If this occurs, try placing the pedometer at waist level behind the hip or on the back.

Pedometer Button Functions

Mode Button
Press the MODE button to move between Step Counter (step), Mileage Counter (mile), Calories Counter (kcal), MVPA/Bouts Counter and Activity Time Counter (Act time).

Set Button
Press the SET button to program/set Step Filter and Lock Code (in step mode), Stride Length (in mile mode), Weight (kcal mode), Steps per Minute and Bouts of Activity (in MVPA mode). Setting each of these functions is discussed in detail below.

Reset Button
Press and hold the RESET button for 3 seconds to clear all counters. All counters are cleared when the pedometer is reset. However, programmed data including your step filter, lock code, stride length, weight, steps per minute, and bout length will not be erased.

Battery Conservation
Joanna Hall pedometers have a “green mode” to preserve battery life. If the pedometer is inactive for 5 minutes, it will turn off and show a blank display. To turn the display on, walk or move the pedometer and it will resume counting. No data is lost when the pedometer is in the “sleep” mode.

Resetting the Pedometer
Joanna Hall pedometers use a delayed RESET button to prevent accidentally deleting recorded data. To reset the pedometer, gently press the pad of your finger on the RESET button for three seconds until the step count reads zero. The display will flash during the three second interval to signal that resetting is underway.

Selecting a Mode
Step Count: In most cases, start walking with the pedometer in the step mode. Any mode can be selected as a starting point and all the counters function regardless of the mode displayed. To start in the step mode, press the MODE button until “step” appears on the right side of the display. When the RESET button is pressed a single zero appears in the counter.

Distance: Press the MODE button until the word “mile” appears in the upper right corner of the display. Distance is calculated by multiplying the number of steps accumulated by your stride length. When the display is reset, it shows 0.00 which reflects distance in miles and hundredths of a mile.

Caloric Expenditure: Press the MODE button until the word “kcal” appears on the right side of the display. When the display is reset, it shows “0” (no calories have been expended).

Bouts and MVPA Time: Press the MODE button until “MVPA time” appears in the lower right corner of the display. This display also shows “Bouts” of physical activity on the left side of the display.

Activity Time: Press the MODE button until the words “Act Time” appear on the right side of the display. Activity Time calculates the total amount of time you are active, so it will only accumulate time while you are moving. When the reset button is pressed, the display will show 0:00:00, representing hours, minutes and seconds.

Locking the Pedometer
Joanna Hall pedometers can be locked so users can examine the display but not reset it. This prevents accidental resetting of the pedometer. To lock and unlock the pedometer, follow the steps below:

  1. Push the MODE button until you are in the step mode.
  2. To lock: Press and quickly release the SET button. The display will show five flashing hyphens. To enter a lock code, any combination of the numbers 1, 2, and 3 can be used. To enter a code number, the MODE button will enter the number 1, the SET button number 2, and the RESET button number 3. Thus, if the buttons are pushed in the following order: MODE, SET, RESET, MODE, SET, the combination will be 12312 Once 5 numbers are entered (within 10 seconds), the letter “L” will display in the lower left hand corner of the display indicating that the pedometer is locked and cannot be reset.
  3. To unlock: Press and quickly release the SET button. The display will display five. Enter the combination that was entered to lock the pedometer. The display will flash and the “L” in the lower left hand corner of the display will disappear. The pedometer can now be reset.

Setting the Step Filter
Joanna Hall pedometers incorporate a user-adjustable step filter. A step filter counts a specified number of steps before actually incorporating them into the total step count. For example, if the step filter is set to three and a person takes 2 steps and then sits down or stops moving, those 2 steps will not be added to the total step count. This helps eliminate false steps that occur in a variety of situations, such as traveling in a car, shifting in a chair, or sitting down. Depending on what the pedometer is used for, i.e., research or personal use, a step filter may or may not be desired. The step filter on Joanna Hall pedometers can be set, depending on personal needs. There are three settings:

  • A value of “F-0” equals no step filter and all steps are counted
  • “F-3” filters out less than three consecutive steps and no steps are added to the step total. If three or more consecutive steps are taken, all three steps are added to the total step count. The default setting from the factory is 3 steps.
  • Selecting “F-5” filters out less than five consecutive steps and no steps are added to the step total. If five or more steps are taken, all five steps are added to the total step count.

To set the step filter, follow the steps below:

  • Push the MODE button until you are in the step mode.
  • Hold down the SET button for three seconds. The display will show “F- 3.” Push the SET button and it will show the next value which in this case would be “F-5.” Push the SET button again and it will cycle to “F-0.”
  • Release the SET button and it will revert back to the step display in 10 seconds and the new value will be stored.

To Set Your Stride Length;

1. Measure a 30 ft distance. Mark the starting and finishing line.
2. Count the number of steps it takes you to walk the 30 ft. Walk at your normal pace (the pace you think you use most throughout the day).
3. Find your step number and the corresponding stride length (in feet and inches) in the following table.

Step Number and Corresponding Stride Length
7 = 4'03"
8 = 3'09"
9 = 3'04"
10 = 3'00"
11 = 2'09"
12 = 2'06"
13 = 2'04"
14 = 2'00"
15 = 2'00"
16 = 1'11"
17 = 1'09"
18 = 1'08"
19 = 1'07"
20 = 1'06"
21 = 1'05"
22 = 1'04"

To set your stride length, press the MODE button until mile appears in the upper right corner of the display. Press and hold down the SET button until the feet and inches screen is displayed. Press the SET button until your stride length is displayed in feet and inches. If you go beyond your desired stride length, hold down the reset button and it will return to one foot and zero inches.

To Set Your Weight:
To calculate the number of calories you burn during activity, you must enter your body weight into the pedometer. Press the MODE button until the word KCAL appears in the right hand side of the display. Press the SET button once to activate, then press and hold the SET button until your appropriate weight (in lbs) appears on the display. Release the SET button; your weight is now entered.

Setting your MVPA Threshold
This pedometer will allow you to measure moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA). Most experts agree that MVPA activity offers the most health benefits. This pedometer is user adjustable so that you can set the threshold for MVPA based on your steps per minute (SPM). In other words, when you move at a speed over your selected SPM threshold, you will accumulate time on the “MVPA time” counter and the Activity time counter. When you move at a slower speed than your selected threshold, you will only accumulate time on the “Act time” counter. Since people walk at an infinite number of speeds, you will have to identify what your MVPA threshold is.

Follow the steps below too determine how fast you must move (SPM) to achieve MVPA:

  1. Take a short walk (2-3 minutes) to warm up and get ready for MVPA.
  2. After the warm up, increase your speed to a brisk walk (the current ACSM definition of MVPA). Usually, this means moving at a pace you have to think about versus merely strolling along. When you have identified what you think is a brisk walking speed for you, go to step 3.
  3. Put your pedometer in step mode, clear it, and walk briskly for 1 minute. At the end of the minute, stop, open your pedometer, and read the number of steps you have accumulated while walking. That will be the MVPA threshold level in steps per minute that you will set on your pedometer.
  4. Set your pedometer to the MVPA level that most closely approximates your MVPA level found in step 3. The pedometer can be set in intervals of 10 starting with a low value of 70 SPM to a high value of 150 SPM. Round off your SPM count to the nearest value.
  5. All activity that you accumulate over your MVPA threshold level will accumulate in the “MVPA time” counter on your pedometer.

After identifying your MVPA threshold, you must enter that value into the pedometer. To do so, press the MODE button until you are looking at the “MVPA time” counter. Quickly, press the SET button to enter the SPM screen. It will show the level and number of steps per minute i.e., 5-110. Continue to push the SET button until the desired value is reached. There are 9 levels from which you can choose.

Setting the Length of Continuous Activity Bouts
The activity guidelines for adult stipulate that they should accumulate 30 minutes of MVPA physical activity on most days of the week. For children, the guidelines stipulate 60 minutes or more of MVPA. In addition, some of the MVPA activity should be accumulated in continuous bouts of MVPA (without stopping). For adults, the recommended length of continuous activity bouts is 10 minutes and for children 15 minutes. The pedometer will measure continuous bouts of MVPA activity. The length of the bouts can be set from 5 to 20 minutes in intervals of 1 minute.

To set the length of your continuous activity bouts, press the MODE button until you are looking at the “MVPA time” counter. Press and hold the SET button to enter the bouts screen. You can enter a value of 5 to 20 minutes by pressing the SET button.
